Upcoming Events and Announcements
SPECIAL SUPER BOWL SUNDAY MINCHA/MAARIV MINYAN On Sunday February 3, YIWP will have a Mincha Minyan at 5:00 PM. Maariv will follow shortly thereafter. There will be no late Maariv at YIWP on Sunday evening. Miriam Klein Shapiro Scholar Series Volunteers Needed For Bikur Cholim Bikur Cholim of Rockland is organizing an effort to set up apartments near the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for observant Jews who have family there on Shabbat. 3 to 5 volunteers are needed to help set up food in the apartments every erev Yom Tov and Shabbat. It takes no more than half an hour of time plus the ride there and back (approximately 15 min each way). It involves setting timers and putting food on the blech. This would be done between 2PM and candle lighting time (in the winter the food is delivered much earlier so it won't be so last minute before an early Shabbat.) Volunteers are also needed to take the food off the blech and unplug the hot water after Shabbat or Yom Tov. This takes even less time and a few volunteers are needed to do this on Saturday nights so that no one will be obligated to go over there more than once a month. For more information, please contact Judy Tretin. Family Learning Night on Saturday Night, February 9 Our next Family Learning Night will be on Motzei Shabbat, January 12 at 6:45 PM. Children 5 and over and their parents are invited to come and learn together on Motzei Shabbat at YIWP. Ice Cream and other refreshments will be provided to all participants and the program is free of charge. There will also be prizes for all of the children who attend. Save The Date - Sisterhood Boutique The YIWP Sisterhood will be having its annual boutique on Sunday March 30, from 4-7 PM. For more information, please contact Jessica Ressler. The YIWP annual dinner will take place on Sunday March 23, 2008. The honorees for the dinner are Guests of honor: Fran and Pinchas Nuchims. Keter Shem Tov: Dr. Bonnie Eilen. The YIWP Annual Meeting will take place on Sunday night February 10, 2008 at 8:00 PM at YIWP. The meeting will include election of a new board of trustees. We have received many inquiries about ways in which we can assist Israel during the current conflict. Please consider the following:
- Support Israel by purchasing Israeli products. You may do so online through www.whiteplainsforisrael.org <http://www.whiteplainsforisrael.org> and/or buy products in local stores. We encourage everyone to sign up for the YIWP Israeli Products Pledge. For more information please contact Juli Smith Brasch;
- CNN is holding a vote online to determine if people believe that Israel's actions are just or unjust. Please take a minute, vote in the CNN poll, and show your support for Israel in this struggle for her security. The CNN poll is important because critics of Israel are always looking for any "validation" that shows Israel in a negative light. To vote, visit http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/14/mideast/index.html SCROLL DOWN WHEN YOU GET TO THE PAGE AND YOU WILL FIND A BOX THAT SAYS "QUICKVOTE". A YES VOTE SHOWS THAT YOU SUPPORT ISRAEL IN THIS STRUGGLE FOR HER SECURITY;.
- Call President Bush at the White House at 1-202-456-1111 to let him know that we appreciate his continued support of the State of Israel;
- Attend our daily Minyanim where we will be saying special Tehillim and Tefillot on behalf of Israel;
- Give to the Israeli Tzedakah of your choice (for some suggested charities, please contact the White Plains Israel Action Committee).
- Support Aipac, the most important pro-Israel lobbying group in Washington. For more information, you may contact Aipac at http://aipac.org <http://aipac.org/> .
- Support Friends of the IDF, an organization dedicated to supporting Israeli Soldiers. For more information, please contact Friends of the IDF at http://www.israelsoldiers.org/
- Support local efforts including the Mitzvah Messenger and Roses From Israel Programs. Flyers with more information are available in the Shul.
- Send chocolate to an Israeli soldier: send a personal message of support and a chocolate bar to an Israeli soldier for free (courtesy of Elite and the Heritage Affinity Services). http://www.websense-media.co.il/has_200706/default.asp?gid=friend <http://www.websense-media.co.il/has_200706/default.asp?gid=friend>
- Send Pizza to an Israeli Soldier – Contact www.pizzaidf.org <http://www.pizzaidf.org/> for more information.
- YIWP is organizing a clothing drive for Israeli victims of terror. This effort is being done in conjunction with the Jewish Agency.

ISRAEL ACTION (Sponsored by the Israel Action Committee of the Synagogues of White Plains) - for more information go to: http://www.whiteplainsforisrael.org *WE’RE TWINS – The City of White Plains has officially twinned with the Jerusalem suburb of Mevasseret Tziyon. This twinning was commemorated during Mayor Delfino’s recent visit to Israel, when he received the key to the city to Mevasseret (the key is now prominently displayed in the Mayor’s office). Together with the Israel Action Committee, the Mayor's office is setting up a working group to develop specific initiatives to work with Mevasseret. For example, one of the first areas suggested by Mayor Delfino is cooperation in the area of public safety. We are looking for 2 people from Young Israel to participate in this White Plain-Mevasseret Working Group. Please contact Juli Smith Brasch (422-3319) to volunteer. *ISRAEL UPDATE – Cablevision local access channel 76 is airing the weekly program “Israel Update,” every Wednesday at 10:30 PM. The program, hosted by Charlie Bernhout, will include weekly updates and discussions about current events in Israel. *ITEMS NEEDED – Hotel toiletry and bath items are being collected and sent to Israeli soldiers without families through the organization A Package from Home (www.apackagefromhome.org). If you have such items available at home, please consider helping out Israeli soldiers. In addition, the Israel Action Committee is collecting used clothing to be sent to poor families in Israel. For further information, please contact Juli Smith Brasch at 422-3319 or juli.smith@aig.com. *BE A SH’LIACH MITZVAH - If you are traveling to Israel, please consider taking a small package of items with you.
